Weathering Madrid, Your Comprehensive Annual Temperature Tour

So what is the average temperature in Madrid throughout the year. I have been living here for nearly ten years, and I can tell you the summers are definitely warmer. 

There used to be a couple of days in August where it would be 40c and they would be pretty intense. But as the years went on, the days increased, and now in 2023 most of July and now August has been hovering around the high 30c. 

The winters are not harsher though, thee winter is not actually that cold in Madrid. I mean you get a few days where you need to bring out the big coat, but you never really need gloves, scarf, hat, boots, like the full get up is rarely necessary. 

But, if you are just going to be visiting, I want to give you some information on what the temperature in Madrid is like for each month of the year. 

The Temperature in Madrid Through The Year

Temperature in Madrid in January:
The weather in Madrid in January averages high temperatures of around 10°C (50°F). The city experiences chilly lows of approximately 2°C (36°F), making it a winter month to bundle up.

Within the city it’s never so cold that you can’t go outside, but if you venture on to the Sierra of Madrid, make sure you have some serious winter gear, it’s cold up there for real.

For the weather in Madrid in February, the average high climbs to about 12°C (54°F), while the low temperatures linger around 3°C (37°F). Its still pretty cool out, but it’s also always sunny. 

On a sunny day, you can get away with a thin shirt if you are in the direct sunlight, but once the sun goes down you want make sure you have something warmer to cover up with.

The weather in Madrid in March is a significant difference to how you dress. It brings average high temperatures of 15°C (59°F) and lows of about 5°C (41°F), creating a more inviting atmosphere as spring unfolds.

In Madrid, you realize that you go from winter to warm overnight. You wake up one day, and the cold wind has just disappeared. The evenings are still cool, but at this point you can just walk around with a thin sweater on a normal sunny day.

The weather in Madrid in June starts to give you a sense of what the summer months are going to bring. Average high temperatures soar to 28-32°C (82°F), and lows maintain around 15°C (59°F).

You are not quite sweaty yet, but long walks can be less tolerable if you are going at a pace. The bars are now going in full swing though, so there will be plenty of watering holes to keep you going.

The weather in Madrid in July is where you start to get tested. This is now summer coming to its peak with average high temperatures of 33-35°C (91°F). Nights are still really pleasant though, with lows of about 18°C (64°F), creating a warm ambiance.

The weather in Madrid in August is a scorcher. A lot of people escape to the north of Spain to avoid it and you wont see many locals around in August.

Temperatures from the last few days of July then through August hit 40c (104°F) and  hover around lows around 34°C (94°F). The evenings can be really hot too on the days that hit 40c.
