Taste the Tradition: 11 Must-Visit Kosher Establishments in Madrid

I grew up in London, not far from a very prominent Jewish Community in Stamford Hill, and my brothers even went to a Jewish school. Because of this, I was exposed to a lot of the culture and food and really grew to like it. So when I moved and found there were kosher restaurants in Madrid, and shops where you can buy kosher food, I was pretty happy about it.

Kosher cuisine has been gaining popularity all over the world, and Madrid is no exception. There is a small but growing Jewish community in Madrid, and in turn this means more kosher shops and restaurants opening up in Madrid to serve this community and others like me that simply enjoy the food.

In this article I want to let you know about some of the best kosher restaurants in Madrid, and also some shops where you can buy kosher food in Madrid.

Kosher Certification in Madrid

Before you can label and sell kosher food, it must be certified by a verifiable body. Kosher certification is a process that will verify if a food product or establishment selling food meets the dietary requirements of Jewish Law. Very specific standards must be met, including the ingredients must be kosher also and the food served in accordance with Jewish dietary laws.

The local Jewish community in Madrid have established the Kashrut Commission of Madrid, which is responsible for overseeing that each establishment selling, or restaurant making kosher food in Madrid is preparing their food following the strict guidelines for kosher food preparation.

Barganzo

Do you like hummus? well this is a hummus lovers paradise, and one of the most popular kosher restaurants in Madrid. This restaurant even won a 2022 Traveler´s choice award for all the excellent reviews they have received from worldwide travellers. A great choice of a Vegan restaurant in Madrid, as they have many options for you here.

You can share some freshly made hummus, falafels, shakshuka, and it’s also a really cool place to hang out, just around the corner from the Malasaña neighborhood. So after you fill your belly, you can walk it off seeing some of the sights.

Barganzo is one of the kosher restaurants in Madrid you have to visit, if only for the amazing hummus. They are open from mon-sun bur check the times before you go because they do close for siesta time.

Restaurante La Escudilla

This kosher restaurant in Madrid is in the Chamberi neighborhood. The decor is simple and charming, and once you sit down and the lady that seems to run the entire restaurant comes and lets you know what is available on the menu, you feel more like you are eating at your nans house.

As soon as you sit down, you are given a starter of hummus and warm bread, always a welcome treat. I wanted to try the lamb when I went, but they were fresh out, so we got a plate of assorted hummus (aubergine, beetroot, carrot) to start. Then we had some beef skewers, keftas, vegetable cous-cous and beef filled sheet cakes.

You want a full belly? and from a kosher Madrid restaurant, then you will not leave here wanting. The almond dessert we had was also one of the star dishes, all washed down with a kosher wine. Expect to spend around €20 per person. The restaurant is open from 13.00 to 23.30, and closes between 5-8pm.

Pizzeria Rimmon – kosher pizza in Madrid

I don’t know about everywhere else, but this is the first and only kosher pizza restaurant in Madrid. They did have to close down for a bit when the world was upside down, but they are back stronger than ever serving up some amazing pizza with the best kosher ingredients. It’s not just pizza though, they also have a number of kosher pasta dishes to choose from.

My favorite was the pizza calzone and the breadsticks! A must go when considering kosher restaurants in Madrid. They are open from sun-Thursday 13.30 – 23.00, but closed between 17.00-19.30.

Solomon Grill Kosher Fusión

A kosher restaurant in Madrid, but not just any. All of the food here is certified kosher and of the highest quality. They have some of the most amazing meats cooked over a chargrill, and the restaurant itself is very well decorated and gives you the feeling of high dining.

Among the menu they have fusion dishes, salads, lamb, chicken, fish, and a whole list of desserts. The home made ice cream parve is especially tasty. The restaurant is open from Sun-Fri from 12pm to 12am, with the exception of Friday where they close at 3.00pm.
