So, whether you’re visiting for 2 days or 2 weeks, this guide will walk you through the best areas to stay in Madrid, written by someone who lives here and knows what it actually feels like to walk the streets at night, find a good coffee in the morning, and crash in a quiet hotel room after a long day.
Where to Stay in Madrid by Neighborhood
🏛️ Centro (Sol, Gran Vía, Opera)
If it’s your first time in Madrid, staying in the centre is a safe bet. You’re right in the heart of the city — close to the Royal Palace, Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol, and dozens of shops, cafes, and restaurants.
Best for: First-time visitors, short stays

Cons: It’s busy, noisy, and not cheap

Madrid had become one of the most visited cities in the world in recent years, so you really need to book early. Even way in advance hotels are not cheap in Madrid, so you need to be meticulous about your planning here.
Book early — especially in spring and fall
Madrid is walkable — but the metro makes even the outer neighborhoods easy to access
If you want nightlife — stay near Malasaña or Chueca
Traveling with kids? — Retiro or Salamanca are your best bets
Avoid August — many locals leave and the city can feel a bit empty
